Thank you so much for taking the time to read about me.

I have been obsessed with knives my entire life. I remember vividly walking around antique shows with my parents, as a child. Everything about it - the smell of antiques, the air, the time of year... But especially - the glass display cases, which had old knives in them. I somehow convinced my parents that I wanted to collect rare knives, but in reality, I wanted to play with them, cut things and show my friends. I still have many of those early knives tucked away...

My father and I would go fishing in Canada every year (for northern pike and large mouth bass) Sitting outside the Opinicon, in the evening, watching the sunset - my father would teach me how to sharpen a knife by hand (with a stone) The blade would become so sharp that I would constantly cut each finger. My father gave me a very nice black handled knife, that I promptly lost - throwing into the wood dock (and, bounced off into the water...) I was heart broken.

At one point, I took one of my fathers small pocket knives (I remember it being a small folder with an amber jigged bone handle) It still pains me to remember losing it in the woods, trying to throw it into a tree... In fact, that single event brings me to today - how I started ADM Knives.

Throughout the years, I have watched e-bay for custom knives. My first real custom was by Ray Rantanen. It's a gorgeous damascus hunter with elk antler handles and a beautiful leather sheath.

At some point in early 2007, I found a forum (USN) and signed up. There, I read many posts from knife makers and collectors. I enjoyed seeing all of the beautiful knives that were hand made.

Meanwhile, my father had talked about retiring in the next year or so. I began to get the idea of having a custom knife maker design a knife that resembled the knife that I stole from him as a child (something he could use around the house, cutting cardboard boxes and assaulting saplings in the backyard which needed to be trimmed) I thought that it would have to be razor sharp and have amber jigged bone handles. Things weren't going as I planned though and it seemed as if I would have to wait a very long time to have one built. I then got the idea, "I'll try my hand at building him a knife".

I read everything I could and set out in my garage to build a knife. My first knife, was a tanto style, with camel bone handles. I almost died inhaling the awful fumes that came from grinding that material (haven't used since) With my $39 bench grinder, I did my best.

I was very happy that I completed a knife (even though it looked like something an inmate would trade a pack of cigarettes for...)

I then began making knife after knife by hand. Each knife would take me atleast 50 hours to complete from start to finish. I would order 1095 steel, use a hacksaw to cut out a rough profile, use my grinder to clean it up and then cut the bevels with hand files and sand paper.

I would then heat treat in my backyard and double temper in my kitchen oven. Then, I would try and hand rub a finish on it. I added oak flooring wood for handles (with epoxy, brass rods for pins and a lanyard hole)

After 5 or 6 knives - I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life (but not with hand files!) So, I bit the bullet and contacted James Poplin of Pops Knife Supplies in Georgia. He was terrific in helping me decide which knife grinder to go with. I am now the proud owner of a brand new Bader III, 2HP with variable speed 2x72 belt grinder (with all the fixins...) I love it.

I moved my operation into my basement (which is now buried in steel/wood/micarta dust) I have made many knives with the new grinder and continue to learn new tricks and ways to make an exceptional knife.

Each time I finish a knife, I wind up sending out e-mails to everyone I know, showing my progress. This website was a way to streamline information and make it all available to people - quickly! Then, I could spend more time in my shop grinding and less time e-mailing.

I have a wonderful Uncle who has been giving me lots of great advice. I have an amazing wife who could care less about knives, but is very supportive. And, I have a forum of knife enthusiasts who have given me suggestions each step of the way...

I haven't finished that knife for my fathers retirement yet, but have already made a throwing knife for him, a beautiful s30v camp style knife and am eventually going to get that jig handled one done... That will be the ultimate point in my knife making career. But, I want to learn how to improve more, before I make that final knife for him. I believe I owe a debt that I'll never be able to repay, to the man who has been my greatest inspiration. So, for now - that knife is in the "planning" stage.

I have been working as an addictions counselor for 8+ years and as a clinical supervisor for the past 5+ years. It's an exciting time in my life, as I am currently leaving one job to go work for the State of NY. My shift will be changing, so I can spend my mornings working on knives.

Each knife that I make, I put my heart into. I am never totally satisfied with the final product, but love the knife enough to not want to sell it (which can cause some business problems... lol)

Ok, I have written way more than I probably should have. Time to get back to grinding. Thanks again for the support and interest in ADM Knives.

Warmly,

Andrew David Merrill
